Conflict Resolution

A Dangerous Creature

Author's Note- In this piece I am writing a conflict / resolution piece about the book Life of Pi.

"You think the tiger is your friend?! He is an animal, not a playmate!" Yells Pi's dad.  "Animal's have souls too... I've seen it in their eyes! ~Pi Patel

The death bed of a boy on a boat with a tiger, hyena, orangutan, and zebra.  In the book Life of Pi, Pi Patel must learn to trust in order to stay alive.  This means that the book is a person vs. self, it would also be person vs. nature.  By nature I mean that Pi is fighting to survive in storms and he has to survive the tiger.  On his journey through trust and hope he finds the secret ways of the animals in ways you would never expect it.

The main conflict of the story is Pi vs. himself, he finds the trust through a Bengal tiger which in the beginning of the book Pi finds is a very dangerous animal.  This is a good example why he needs to earn trust.  The tiger mauled the goat without hesitating and now Pi needs to find out how to avoid that.  In the book he finds it by letting the tiger take control.  He put the inside feelings to himself and the physical items he gave to the tiger.  He believed in God the whole time making the trust in the tiger, God, and defiantly himself in a great strength proving that he could learn it.

This book also reminds me of the book Hatchet, when a boy similar to Pi finds himself in a life threatening situation he must trust himself and the search party that he will stay alive.  He battles cold nights, and cold-blooded creatures that want him to be their next meal.  All the items he has is himself and a hatchet that he puts trust in causing the search party to find him so that he can live a normal life again and never forget the lesson of trust.

At the end of the book Pi finds himself on the Mexican coast with Japanese soldiers.  He finds that all the animals have a new meaning to trust and he had it all along.  The meaning of the tiger represented himself.  He now has learned that if he can put trust in anything he will get through it no matter what the situation, no matter what the cost of a spiritual journey.
