The Ghost Rider
Author's Note- This was a creative piece that I turned in to a word choice reading skill piece.
The annoying pile of leaves bristle down my back causing my spine to go into a deep -- deep -- itch. They sting my skin like a couple hundred bees are angry that I am there. Then I see the horse. It is a dark colored, bony horse with its hip popping out like a greyhound would look when it runs. The rider is looking for something, scowering the area for something in life, me, but not today. Not now when I feel someone is coming for my body for the whole world to see. Clash! Just as I'm running away the horse tramples me over and closes my wind pipe and snaps my neck with one swift hoof to the chin. The rider is now on my tail knowing that he has just caught the straggler. There is a sharp lump in my throat that is cutting in to my heart as I am trying to handle it all in one gulp. The lump has now gone in to my lungs forcing me not to breath. My lungs start to scream at my heart to start beating. I have collapsed and am now in deep trouble. The ghost rider grabs me by my throat and pulls out my heart.
And there my body lies restless -- lifeless in a run down brick manor. Off the east coast of New York with nothing else to find -- and nothing else to be but -- dead.
- What types of figurative language are being used in the text (metaphor, personification, rhyme, rhythm…etc)?
- Why does the author use this type of imagery/language (purpose)?
- What impact does this type of imagery/language have on
3a. the overall tone the author is trying to convey
3b. the overall mood the reader feels from this language
3c. the way the scenes/ characters are developed/envisioned
- I used (in order) personification, imagery, anaphora, simile, hyperbole, onomatopoeia.
- I used the imagery at the beginning of the story and at the end. I used it to set the tone and make the story more interesting and grab the reader to read the rest of my story.
3a. The tone I was going for was a mysterious and creepy setting to grab the reader. Just like the double hyphens to make the story more interesting.
3b. What I am trying to go for in this piece was the hook and keeping the reader entertained so they would want to read more. By incorporating figurative language like I did in this piece like I did I think I did this.
3c. The description of the horse makes the description of the rider a little easier. It leaves a little bit of a mystery not knowing what or who the rider is making it easier to read more.
